Grounds
There are two native prairie plots on campus. One near Life Science II and another near the Center for Environmental Health and Safety. Planting native has several benefits including the enhancement of biodiversity. More generally, these plots contribute to the aesthetic beauty of our campus and reduce the amount of pollution released into the air by decreasing the mowing area. Planting native is a key component of sustainable land use.

SIUC has a policy that states that for each tree removed, it must be replaced with three new trees. Biodiesel fuel (B-20) is used where possible in mowers and tractors. Campus leaf, grass, and landscape waste are composted at the SIU Farms for use on the farms and grounds. Compost for campus plantings is supplied by the vermicomposting operation.
